Hidden in the heart of Agaete, Gran Canaria, El Perola proudly holds the title of the oldest bar in the Canary Islands. With more than 150 years of history, this beloved local bar has resisted the passage of time, preserving its charm, traditions, and loyal clientele.

What makes El Perola truly unique is its quirky custom: whenever customers order peanuts, the shells are tossed straight onto the floor — a ritual that has become part of the bar’s character.

Inside, time seems to have stood still. Dusty bottles line the shelves, the furniture is original, and the menu hasn’t changed in decades.

According to owner Pepe Jiménez, the secret to El Perola’s long life is simple: “I suppose it’s the love we’ve put into it.”

Every Sunday, the bar serves sancocho Canario, a traditional Canarian fish stew, one of its enduring specialities that keeps both locals and visitors coming back.

For anyone visiting Gran Canaria, El Perola offers a taste of living history and authentic island hospitality that’s increasingly rare to find.
