Police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have arrested a man accused of violently attacking and robbing an elderly woman in broad daylight on Avenida Tres de Mayo, near Plaza de la Victoria. The shocking incident took place at around 1:30 pm on 13th September as the woman was walking home.
The suspect allegedly crept up behind her and yanked her handbag so forcefully that she was thrown to the ground and dragged several metres along the pavement before he tore it from her grasp and fled. The victim was left shaken and injured, requiring medical treatment.
The assault caused alarm among residents in one of Santa Cruz’s busiest areas, where passers-by rushed to help the woman as police began their search.
After a swift investigation, National Police officers tracked down and arrested the suspect, who has since been linked to at least eight other violent robberies carried out in a similar fashion. Investigators say he repeatedly targeted unsuspecting victims in broad daylight, using brute force to snatch their bags and valuables.
Police presented the evidence to judicial authorities, who have ordered that the man remain in custody while the investigation continues.
