A 75-year-old man tragically lost his life after drowning at Salinetas Beach in Telde, Gran Canaria, this morning (Monday). The alarm was raised just before 11 am when beachgoers spotted the man floating in the water and rushed to drag him to shore. Witnesses described frantic scenes as lifeguards and holidaymakers fought to save him.

When rescuers reached the beach, they found the man in full cardiac arrest. Lifeguards from Telde’s Beach Rescue Service began CPR immediately while emergency medics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) raced to take over, but despite prolonged resuscitation efforts, the man could not be revived.

Police officers secured the area as investigators and judicial authorities attended the area to authorise the removal of the body.

In recent weeks, the Canary Islands have seen a worrying rise in drowning incidents, both along the coast and in hotel swimming pools. Just days ago, a 38-year-old man was rescued from the water at Playa Jardín in Tenerife, while in Lanzarote, a woman tragically lost her life at Playa Matagorda in Puerto del Carmen.

There have also been several cases involving children, including a five-year-old girl who was left in a serious condition after a near-drowning in a hotel pool in Fuerteventura, and a young boy hospitalised following a similar incident in Adeje, Tenerife.

Authorities have again urged residents and tourists to remain vigilant near the water, warning that even calm-looking seas or resort pools can become dangerous in seconds.
