From May 2026, residents and visitors in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will finally be able to book or request a taxi using their mobile phones with a service that, until now, has not been available in the island’s capital. The Cabildo has approved a €295,000 contract to develop, launch, and maintain a new digital taxi booking system.

The project, officially titled the Technological System for Taxi Service Requests, will include both a cloud-based central platform and a mobile app for passengers and drivers. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez explained that the winning company will have eight months to design and implement the system, followed by a two-year period of support and maintenance.

“This initiative pushes forward the digitalisation of the city’s taxi service, allowing users to make personalised bookings in real time,” he said. “It’s another step towards a smarter, more efficient Santa Cruz that improves mobility and the quality of service for everyone.”

The app will allow users to request a taxi instantly or make reservations in advance, specifying details such as the number of passengers, the need for a vehicle adapted for reduced mobility, or the transport of pets.

According to Councillor for Strategic Planning, Carlos Tarife, the platform will also provide drivers with real-time information about the location of other taxis and nearby ranks, helping them work more efficiently and reduce waiting times. It will also generate valuable statistical data to help the council make better-informed decisions about transport and traffic flow in the city.

Councillor for Mobility, Evelyn Alonso, highlighted that the new system will make Santa Cruz’s taxi sector more competitive and efficient, benefiting both users and drivers.

Once operational, the app will include a panic button allowing taxi drivers to immediately contact the Local Police or emergency services if they encounter a dangerous situation.

“This is about creating a faster, safer, and more accessible taxi service for everyone in Santa Cruz,” Alonso concluded.
