Meteorologists from Spain’s Met Office are closely monitoring Hurricane Gabrielle, currently located east of Bermuda and moving east-northeast across the Atlantic towards the Iberian Peninsula.

According to the US National Hurricane Centre, which has been tracking the system since it first formed off the coast of West Africa, Gabrielle is expected to reach the Azores on Friday. By then it will have weakened and is forecast to downgrade to a post-tropical depression.

AEMET explained on social media that hurricanes in the Atlantic during autumn are “relatively common.” While there is still some uncertainty about its final path, forecasters say the storm could bring rough seas, rainfall, and strong winds to parts of western Spain later this week.

Importantly for the Canary Islands, Gabrielle’s projected track is to the north of the archipelago, meaning no direct impact is currently expected, but the islands could be affected by the tail end of it. However, forecasters emphasise that the outlook could still change as the storm progresses.

This year’s Atlantic hurricane season officially began on 1st June and will run until 30th November. Activity so far has been relatively quiet, but experts warn that powerful storms can still form in the coming weeks.
