64 migrants arrive by boat in El Hierro with one in critical condition
A cayuco with 64 migrants on board arrived at the port of La Restinga in El Hierro this morning (Saturday), according to reports from the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (CECOES).
Emergency teams, including the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), Primary Care staff, and the Red Cross, were on site to assist those on board. Two people from the boat required hospital treatment.
One of them, suffering from severe dehydration, was in a critical condition and had to be evacuated by helicopter to the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital in Tenerife, where he was admitted for urgent treatment.
This latest arrival highlights the continued humanitarian challenges faced in the Canary Islands, as migrant boats, often overcrowded and in poor condition, continue to reach the archipelago from West Africa.
