Unfinished sports hall in Playa Blanca faces more delays
The Yaiza Town Council has formally terminated the contract for the long-delayed Playa Blanca Sports Hall after the construction company in charge, Levantina Ingeniería y Construcción S.L., entered administration last summer, leaving the multi-million-euro project unfinished.
Mayor Óscar Noda explained that they have now “taken all the technical and legal steps necessary to cancel the contract with the insolvency administrators, allowing us to draft new terms, re-tender the remaining works, and finally complete the project.”
A detailed assessment report has been commissioned to identify the outstanding work. According to the first findings, tasks include the testing and certification of all internal facilities such as electrical systems, air conditioning, swimming pool equipment, emergency power generator, telecommunications, plumbing, and drainage, as well as finishing works to the outdoor leisure areas surrounding the building.
The Town Hall said its priority has always been to recover and complete the project so that the facility can finally be opened to the public. “We were left with a half-finished building after the company went bankrupt. Like many other public administrations in Spain, we’ve had to find a legal and viable solution to move forward,” Noda stated.
The council said it has paid the company €520,000 to settle the contract, but cannot claim the final guarantee unless a court finds the bankruptcy was their fault. The builders also asked for an extra €112,000, but Yaiza will deal with that request in a separate process.
Yaiza Town Hall will now prepare a new tender to find a construction company to complete the unfinished works. This process will involve drafting updated specifications, publishing the tender, and awarding the contract to a new contractor. The council has not given a specific timeline for when the Playa Blanca Sports Hall will finally be completed.
